Mayor Bloomberg of New York City has confessed to enjoying smoking marijuana, he has overseen more than 350,000 people arrested for possessing marijuana since he was elected in 2002, which has cost between $500 million to $1 billion to taxpayers. Marijuana possession is considered a minor offense with respect to penalty by the courts, but it can dramatically affect the individual’s life because their offense is permanently entered into criminal databases.

According to the California Legislative Analysts and the Director of Finance an estimate of at least several tens of millions of dollars can be saved on the costs of incarceration of marijuana offenders. In addition to this extra revenue, there can potentially be major taxes and fees which the state of California could have access to, in regards to the production and sale of marijuana products, if proposition 19 would have passed.

During the 2010 November elections in California, Proposition 19, which would have legalized recreational marijuana use by a person over the age of 21, did not pass. Proposition 19 gave California Voters a chance to remedy the evils of the war on drugs, a war without foundation or cause, which has haunted American’s citizens who have been incarcerated for simply possessing or smoking marijuana. Undoubtedly, the criminalization of marijuana has been a fraud on the American people from the very beginning of the war on drugs.

This is true even if the United States government knew that marijuana posed less of a risk to American Society than alcohol, making it far easier to arrest those people who use and possess marijuana. As a result, the criminalization of marijuana has only benefited those who profit from the illegal cultivation and sale of marijuana.

Research at UCLA shows that while smoking marijuana damages cells in respiratory tissue but somehow it prevents the cells from becoming malignant. Something in Marijuana exerts an anti-cancer effect, reports UCLA Medical School professor Donald Tashkin. Tashkin’s team interviewed 1,210 cancer patients and found that increased marijuana use did not increase cancer, where as smoking tabacco clearly was related to cancer. Tashkin found that even the very heavy marijuana smokers showed no increased incidence of the three cancers studied. Although no association between marijuana and cancer was found, the study findings, presented to the American Thoracic Society International Conference this week, did find 20-fold increase in lung cancer among people who smoked two or more packs of cigarettes a day. Other important findings from this study are that THC has been shown to promote apoptosis and to counter angiogenesis.
