Clean water is one of the most important needs of our bodies; so it is a sad fact that clean drinking water can no longer be a guarantee, if it ever was. Most tap water in the United States today is not safe for drinking, due to the high levels of pollution and/or toxic wastes.

An investigation by Earthworks led to the call for the closing of the Hydraulic Fracturing Loophole that is in our water today. According to this article, hydraulic fracturing is a drilling technique that was developed by Halliburton. “Millions of gallons of fresh water, along with sand, and cancer-causing toxic chemicals are injected under high pressure miles down drilling holes to fracture the limestone shale, and release the oil and gas trapped within.” In 2005, at the urging of Dick Cheney who is a former Halliburton CEO, Congress exempted hydraulic fracturing from the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Halliburton earns about 1.5 billion dollars annually from hydraulic fracturing, while ignoring its consequences.

The conventional wisdom in the US corporate media, that the Iranian election was fraudulent, may in fact be incorrect and simple a propaganda ploy by US interests. Robert Parry reports on a new poll that was taken at the end of September showing that about 81 percent of Iranians had confidence with the election outcome and felt that Ahmadinejad was in fact the legitimate president. This is the exact opposite of how US media portrayed how Iranians felt right after the election. Ahmadinejad’s main support group in Iran continues to be the poor, which is the largest electoral segment in the country. Additionally pre-election polls showed Ahmadinejad with overwhelming support from 18-24 year olds in the country.

According to Parry Ahmadinejad’s opponent Mir-Hossein Mousavvi also suggested that his real fear may have been that he genuinely lost the election. In fact Mousavvi came out with a win declaration before the votes were even finished being counted. This article examines how the United States news media was heavily biased against this election and slanted news coverage was the result.

Over 600 products now on the market contain nanoparticles so small that they may have dangerous biological impacts yet to be determined. Nanaparticles could be the asbestos of this century.

Nanotechnology is a quickly growing global industry which is, for the most part unregulated. The worry lies in the fact that when these materials are reduced down to the miniscule nano scale, they take on an entirely different and uncommon set of properties. For example, they could become electrically conductive, or able to penetrate cell walls. More specifically, studies conducted on the negativities of nanotechnology are diminutive compared to those conducted on the positive effects produced. Of $1.5 billion in federal nano spending each year, only between 1% and 2.5% goes towards studying environmental, health and safety risks.

On the other hand, these particles “are used to build innovative materials currently used in hundreds of products worldwide, from socks to sunscreens and even food supplements,” according to Louise Gray, Environmental Correspondent. Along with this, medical researchers are investigating ways to use nanomaterials to target tumors. This would allow doctors to deliver medication directly to cancer cells within the body, and leave the healthy cells absolutely unharmed. Also, possible green tech applications would make for cheaper, more efficient solar panels and water filtration systems, energy-saving batteries and lighter vehicles that ultimately use less fuel.

However, nanoparticles are being compared to asbestos. A substance once seen as a miracle fire-proofing agent, is now associated with lawsuits, illness, and death. Much of the damage caused by asbestos could have been avoided if the government had taken note of the very present danger signs
