Argentine cabinet chief Aníbal Fernández said: “I want them to tell me what would have happened if an Argentine plane with Argentine military or armed men from the Argentinian security forces wanted to enter the U.S. with weapons, with machines to intercept communications, with numbered electronic equipment, with high-potential GPSes and all sorts of other things. They would certainly have ended up in Guantánamo, wearing orange overalls.” The spat comes on the heels of President Obama’s announcement of his first state visit to Latin America. Obama plans to stop in El Salvador, Chile and Brazil.

Peacefully wearing a “Veterans for Peace” t shirt, the cancer survivor was beaten, bruised, and then dragged away in handcuffs before being sent to jail.

The often arrested and jailed protester chose to silently protest Clinton and hypocritical ways regarding her war policies, not her stance on Egypt itself. Continuing on the hypocrisy of Clinton, in the speech being given while McGovern was being dragged away, Clinton said regarding Egypt, “In each case, people protested because of deep frustrations with the political and economic conditions of their lives. They stood and marched and chanted, and the authorities tracked and blocked and arrested them.”

According to the Afghanistan Rights Monitor at least 2,421 civilians were killed in Afghanistan last year, and more than 3,270 civilians were injured in conflict-related security incidents. This means everyday 6-7 noncombatants were killed and 8-9 were wounded in the war.

In addition to the casualties, hundreds of thousands of people were affected in various ways by the intensified armed violence in 2010. Tens of thousands were forced from their homes, or deprived of healthcare and education services and livelihood opportunities due to war.

Armed Opposition Groups were blamed for 63 percent of the total reported civilian deaths, US/NATO forces for 21 percent, pro-government Afghan forces 12 percent, and about 4 percent could not be attributed to an identifiable armed group and labeled “unknown” in the report. Improvised Explosive Devices were the most lethal tools, which killed over 690 civilians and wounded more than 1,800. At least 217 noncombatants died in air strikes and 192 killed in direct/indirect shooting by US/NATO forces in 2010.

The report criticizes Armed Opposition Groups for deliberately killing and harassing civilians, and US/NATO for targeting and labeling people as “suspected insurgents.” The report also highlights concerns over stockpiles and the possible use of illegal cluster munitions by US/NATO forces. These record levels of violence in Afghanistan have catastrophic impacts on civilian Afghan communities.

The Pacific island of Guam, the United States is planning an enormous military buildup of some $15 billion on the Pacific Island of Guam. The project would turn the thirty-mile-long island into a major hub for US military operations in the Pacific. It has been described as the largest military buildup in recent history and could bring as many as 50,000 new people to the tiny island. The indigenous Chamoru community of Guam with over 60,000 residents remains one of only sixteen non-self-governing UN-recognized colonies, of the world. While legally considered US citizens, Chamoru are not allowed vote for the US president. They have no effective, meaningful representation in the US Congress .T he entire population of Guam is approximately 171,000, and the Chomoru population makes up roughly 37 percent. The added military build up would further undermine any possibility of self government by adding some 50,000 new residents on the island. Guam is one of the longest-colonized islands in the Pacific. Guam was colonized by Spain for almost 300 years and then by the United States since 1898 until the present.Between 1946 to 1958, the US dropped more than sixty nuclear weapons on the people of the Marshall Islands. One bomb dropped only 1,200 miles from Guam, was the equivalent of 1.6 or 1.7 Hiroshima bombs every day for twelve years resulting in long term radioactive exposures to the Chamoru population.

Deep packet inspection technology monitors everything that goes through the internet. It is readily available in the United States and there’s no legislation that prevents the US government from employing it. Deep packet inspection is currently used in Iran. The Iranian Government has the ability to look through everything, land line telephones, mobile telephones, email, websites, looking for keywords and actually monitoring the entire traffic going through one chokepoint in Iran. Deep packet inspection is the use of sophisticated equipment that literally watches the entire internet for every piece of data, voice, and video looking for key words, such as “rebel” or “grenade.” It is widely known that since 9/11, AT&T and Verizon were being asked by the Bush administration to deploy this sort of off-the-shelf technology. And they did. Again, Obama came out against the law and said we must punish these carriers for doing this, because it’s illegal, and then he flipped under enormous pressure from the lobbies.
