I am very much concerned about the issue of fake news. It seems that the media is being demonized, not just in the United States, but also in different parts of the world, most especially in Southeast Asia. I have heard in fact that reporters are being jailed or charged in some countries while some are being barred from covering activities of the highest officials.

Samantha, media professor, 45

I agree with you Barbara. A lot of things are currently happening in different parts of the world. In fact, never has journalism been this much threatened here in the United States and globally. In fact, I absolutely feel that if we don’t get our acts together and fight back, journalism will die a slow and gruesome death. I hope that will not happen. This is the reason why I have been telling my students that we have to fight back for the sake of journalism.

David, journalist, 50

Hello Barbara and Samantha! I totally agree. It is only now that journalism is experiencing this kind of threat which also has repercussions for democracy. In the past, when a person lies, especially a person in power, he or she will be counting his or her days in office and that is not the case now.
