The US Chamber of Commerce: A Record of Obstruction on Climate Action

The chamber, by far the largest lobbying force on Capitol Hill – having spent more than $65 million in 2009 – is actively campaigning against meaningful climate change legislation. It is also taking a lead role in challenging the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) attempts to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. More fundamentally, it continues to cast doubt on climate change science and sow fears through exaggerated claims about the economic consequences of greenhouse gas regulation. It is clear that the US Chamber of Commerce does not represent all the businesses of America, only the large Corporations. Other businesses are challenging this stance. Mohawk Fine Paper is the latest company to abandon the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over climate change policies; In a statement, the Cohoes, N.Y.-based paper company wrote, “We believe that our continued membership in an organization that vigorously opposes sensible climate change policies is detrimental to our position as a business leader with a strong record in the areas of environmental innovation and climate protection.” Even some local Chambers are distancing themselves from the US Chamber of Commerce.

I find it disturbing that so many readily repeat the big lie that business and the banksters aren’t 100% behind climate legislation. Cap and trade was developed by the altruistic minds at Enron and pushed for by Goldman Sachs. Surely what those two giants humanitarianism have the planet’s and people’s best interests in mind……

It’s shameful if the US chamber of commerce can favor large corporation at the expense of billions of people who will suffer . These are amazing facts. It is so suprising how the self interest of a few can threaten the dream of a better tomorrow. It is about time somebody steps up and speak against these people. Climate change is real and all the statistics show that. We are not going to have a better world with this kind of attitude in fact we shall be digging our own graves if this continue. Companies such as EPA should be supported and be recognazed because they are all advocating for the good of our future.

This goes to show that the chamber of commerce is owned by few individuals who benefit from companies that negatively affect the climate, and so long as climate control affect directly the profits of these companies then corruption becomes an inevitable evil. Take action now before its too late.

People should learn a liltle be more about the impact of those big industrial companies, the greenhouse gases they produce on our
environment and the consequences for our planet, to realize their need to stand up and do something to stop or at least
    reduce their actions.

I don’t know how US Politics works. To me, the US is `Green` or `Red` on Environmental issues depending on who is at the White House. If it is a Democrat, the US is `Green`. If it is a Republican, the US is `Red`. For instance, Clinton supported the Kyoto Protocol. Bush came and opposed it. Obama is now taking a leading role in the world on Environmental Protection. Republicans support their reach friends in the Wall Street who own those large Corporations. Democrats support their poor friends on the Main Street. Since the person in the White House is changed after approximately 8 years from a Democrat to a Republican or vice versa, the US will always be either `Green’ or `Red` for approximately that period of time. My conclusion is therefore, the US Chamber of Commerce is pro Republican.

Over the years we have seen how the USA, Europe and China have played down on enforcing the climate change policy.
So for the US Chamber of Commerce to take such stance should not take anybody by surprise, after-all they are made up of Big/multi-dollar company that find it hard to cut down on their carbon emission level.
However since the US chamber of commerce doe not represent the entire business companies in US, then environmental concerns business should pull themselve together and form a platform that they can use for better climate change policy advocacy.
it is important that the rest of other business form a platform for plicy advocacy, if not the US chamber of commerce can water down the proposed US climate change policy when formulating it, because of the interest of the big companies that makes up the chamber.
I will like those interested in climate change issue to join us and contribute their ideas on this online social network call Climate cool Nigeria, just log on to http://www.naijaclimatecool.ning.com.

Most of the US chamber of commerce members do stand to lose due to measures involved in supporting CC, therefore it is not surprising that they can not voluntarily sing the ‘CC is real’ song. Passing the buck is not an option for the chamber this time around, they have to own up and behave responsibly at their own cost and not at the cost of others (PPP). Enquiry and exposure of their behaviour and more pressure should be exerted on them in order to save the world from the effects from their unsustainable pursuit of selfish interest.

Yes. I agree the Chamber of Commerce have taked an aggresive position against such an important environmental issue. While I think the chamber should work to promote business, loosing the moral obligation of protecting natural resources is not an option. The chambers action as a leading lobbying agent on this issue surely obstract justice that we expect should be served by those who we sent to the legislature to represent us in protecting the environment and many other social issues.

It is not suprising to see the US Chember of Commerce or any other champer in the world opposing CC iniatitives. Chember members are all bussiness oriented with an ego of making super profit. Any measure that involve using the profit gained in curbing green house will certainly be opposed. But they forget that they are part of this planet and just as a reminder the late Mwalimu Nyerere was once heard saying ‘environmental issues are a common concern to all nationalities, both the north and the south and that it was a collective responsibility to safeguard the environment lest all would perish’’.When temperature rises it does not selective, though those in the south are the mostly affected, but the south is the source of large parcentage of resouces that the north uses in production of good and services. Pressure be exerted to bring sense to the Chember members

It is very Ironic for same powers who are responsible behind climate change to tell Africa to to do things they have failed to do themselves. It is about time we tell USA to stop being self-centered and take action against climate change. At the same time Africa and the rest of the world be reminded to preserve the gift of nature from God. Big up to Mohawk Fine Paper, I hope other corporations will follow your example.

The chamber of commerce is reluctant to support the passing of the meaningful climate change legislation for some reasons that need to be taken into consideration as we handle this subject.Prompt passing of the legislation may negatively affect some of America’s Industries and eventually collapse the ceconomy which today stands to be the worlds largest.
It is true and vital that the chamber should support the passing of the legislation as the world has already started feeling the negative effects of
climate change and America is one of the worst hit regions. There is no time to look to the future for planning and changing hence the process needs to be in action now in order to reduce the effects but the chamber needs to be supported.
This being a global issue,I suggest that the United Nations Wing for Trade
should help the American chamber of commerce positively manage the
challenges this may pose to its stakeholders in particular industries.Enviromental activists should also take an active role in lobbying
the World Trade Organisations help the chamber of commerce work out a well planned time frame for change and protect the existing industries from going out of business should the legislation go through. There is need to protect existing industries (jobs) so as to sustain the Amercan economy.New entrants should by all means abide by the content of the proposed legislation so as to help slow the effects of climate change. This will help improve our enviroment and together make the world a better place to live in with good health and wealth.

regulations pertaining climatic change is crucial for the sustainability of our environment, and all creatures that are supported by its features and characteristics. But also, there should be a balance in order to safeguard industries, so as to sustain stable economy and industrial development in general.

I am shocked by how many people responded to this article are pro-climate controls!!!! All of you should read the hacked emails from East Anglia which show that this hype is all falsified. There is no man made global warming. Even Al Gore, who was stating that the iceburgs were going to melt and cause the oceans to rise, bought a home on the shore. Get a clue people! Wake up. Research the facts. Bring down these people who want to steal from us!!

    Housten! We have a problem!

Climategate is NOT about the earth. It’s about controlling all the people on it. And making carbon sucking pigs like Al the climate Whore rich.

He still runs around in a bit jet. He just bought a BEACH FRONT home for some 9 or so million. I thought he said the oceans were gonna rise…

Man caused GW is fear mongering propaganda. You could call it Warming madness after an older predecessor, Reefer Madness.

If you wanna believe in MC GW go ahead. But lay off the killer weed or you might grab an ax & kill every one in your state.

staightstreet has it down. Good post!!!\

Wanna help the environment, STOP Buying Junk!

If we do not buy stuff, they won’t make it. Buy things that last, save up and buy good things and you won’t have to buy it again next year, throwing away last years in the dump.

Hey, and go to town when you need more than one thing, and if you can work closer to home (less gas usage).

There are lots of things that you can do rather than “Tax the Crap” out of us!
